The United States’ bomber fleets undoubtedly made a huge contribution to the Allied victory in World War Two. While the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator took on the lion’s share of US heavy bombing tasks over Europe, it was the nuclear-capable B-29 Superfortress that became the most famous in the Pacific theater. However, despite the heavy bombers ‘headline act’ status it would be a mistake to overlook the crucial work of the medium bombers. This publication also pays tribute to such aircraft as the B-25 Mitchell and B-26 Marauder that fought countless battles over deserts, jungles, and seas in pursuit of the ultimate victory that cost the lives of tens of thousands of aircrew.
